Why FSC ®-certified MATTERS for your business
The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) standards represent the world’s strongest system for guiding forest management toward responsible outcomes. The FSC® system’s goal is to push the market to eliminate habitat destruction, water pollution, and other destructive impacts that often accompany logging. To carry the FSC® logo as an “environmental claim” on paper, a product must have flowed through the FSC® “chain-of-custody” from the FSC®-certified forest, to a paper manufacturer, merchant, and finally printer, like HAGADONE, who have FSC® chain-of-custody certification.
We encourage recycling paper, but using our FSC®-certified paper, as opposed to traditional recycled paper, is the only way to ensure your business doesn’t contribute to the aforementioned activities that are destructive to the world we leave for future generations. FSC®-certified paper comes from trees that are grown for paper and other wood products, precluding the need for harsh chemicals and bleaches used in recycling paper that wreck our environment.
Hagadone Printing Launches First-of-its-Kind Carbon Offset Program with Legacy Carbon on the Big Island
July 1, 2015 (Honolulu, HI) – Hagadone Printing Company, the leading publication and commercial printing company in Hawaii, today launched a new carbon offset program unlike any other in the world. The new partnership with Legacy Carbon, the certified carbon offset program of Big Island-based sustainable forestry company Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods (HLH), will allow printing and digital marketing clients to offset the environmental impact of their projects by purchasing carbon credits. Legacy Carbon is the only certified program of its kind in Hawaii, and the only company in the world to issue carbon credits for the planting of endemic koa trees. Hagadone Printing Company will also participate directly in the program by offsetting a portion of its Honolulu operations.
Legacy Carbon is the first U.S. organization to be able to issue credits certified by the prestigious Gold Standard Foundation based in Switzerland.
“The Legacy Carbon partnership allows both Hagadone Printing and our clients the unique opportunity to offset the carbon footprint of projects and operations while having a tangible positive impact in Hawaii,” said Clint Schroeder, president and chief operating officer of the Coeur d’Alene, Idaho-based Hagadone Corporation’s Hawaii holdings, which include Hagadone Printing. “The added cost is pennies on the dollar, amounting to a huge benefit for our state in the creation of green jobs and environmental payoff. We are working toward having all of our print projects be carbon neutral.”
Hagadone has partnered with HLH since 2010 to plant thousands of koa trees for permanent reforestation, becoming one of the first businesses in the world to do so.
Solar PV system reflects Hagadone’s values
In October 2011, Hagadone erected a 433-7-kW solar photovoltaic system, with 1,408 panels spread across 25,000 square feet of existing roof space. Revolusun designed and built this renewable energy system. We expect this multi-million-dollar PV system will power a quarter of the energy we use at our facility, and save us more than $160,000 in electricity costs in its first year alone. In addition, we also became one of the first commercial installations to take advantage of HECO’s feed-in tariff program. Under this program, any excess energy we produce will be purchased by HECO at a fixed rate for the next 20 years.
